I was there on the roof of the Nomo hotel in Soho, camera in hand, ready to capture the magic of my friend Áwet’s new fashion line. It’s a line of livewear, made right here in the heart of the Garment District and now available at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Áwet’s story is a wild one. He’s a refugee from Ethiopia, and his father told him to look to the forgotten people of our society when the pandemic hit New York City last year. The tailors, the garment workers, the shoe shiners. People with grit and greatness in their hands.

And Áwet took that advice and ran with it. He assembled a crew of beautiful souls and started working on his dream. I was honored to be a part of it, even if I didn’t know just how far he was going to take it.

But then, at the launch party, I met the bigwigs. Kenneth Cole, who mentored Áwet. Marc Metrick, the CEO of Saks Fifth Avenue. And I made a total ass of myself. I was babbling about nonsense, my hands covered in paint from a studio project. It wasn’t my finest hour.

But in the end, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that Áwet’s dream has come true. His line is now available at Saks Fifth Avenue, and I was there to document it. That’s what’s important.

Regardless to say, I am honored to play a small part in getting this beautiful brand created by a lovely person started. Please consider supporting Áwet and the NYC’s Garment district this winter by purchasing at Saks Fifth Avenue, or Áwet’s website at https://awetnyc.com
